Martin, Kathryn "Dorothy" Derstine Hackman
[January 27, 1925-January 29, 2017]

"Would you like to come for lunch after church?" "You are away from your family; we'd love to have you join us for Thanksgiving." "We have plenty of food for one more."

That was our mother--warm and welcoming and always including others around the table. Meals were tasty but not fancy. Things didn't have to be perfect to be hospitable.

On September 3, 1944, Dorothy married Paul H. Martin, and they shared an incredible life journey together. Dad's ministries took them to Arkansas, Virginia, Florida, Colorado, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Iowa; and Mother was an integral part of their ministry and filled many roles in the church.

Mother wasn't pretentious but made an impact on people by being herself. She was always looking for the positive and was incredibly accepting and nonjudgmental of people both close to her and from all walks of life.

She was a wonderful and compassionate listener. We would come home from school and love to sit and talk with her. She was known for her raisin-filled cookies and always ready with tea or coffee for a friend or visitor.

Mother had a deep love of music and learned to play the organ in mid-life. She would disappear from home on Sunday afternoons in Aspen to listen to concerts at the "Music Tent."

Wherever she lived, Mother made friends with people in the community. Her involvements ranged from working in bookstores and at the Aspen Times to volunteering at the hospital as a "Blue Lady." The many Laotian refugees sponsored by the Des Moines Mennonite Church particularly loved her.

Known as Grammy to Shanti, Jessica and Christina, she gave the same warm, listening ear to them, and they loved spending time with her. She was thrilled with the arrival last year of her first great-grandchild, Joaquin.

Mother spent the last few years of her life at Landis Homes, and we are deeply grateful for the caring and compassion of the staff in Cedar and Oregon houses, and especially the Ephrata House in the waning weeks and days of her life.

Born in Souderton, Pa., to Joseph and Katie Derstine Hackman, she was predeceased by siblings Linford, Wilmer, Susan (Moyer), Verna (Moyer), and Walter.

She dearly loved her family and always worked to get us together. We will miss her so much. She leaves her husband of 72 years, Paul, and their four children, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Ed (Kathy) with daughters Jessica & Shanti (Stephen Brown and baby Joaquin); Roger; Laurel (partner Jase Gehman); and Sharon (John Bowman) with daughter Christina.

Mother died two days after her 92nd birthday. She was a member of Akron Mennonite Church.

A memorial service is planned for April 29 at 2:00 in the Dogwood Community Room at Landis Homes.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Caring Fund of Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Rd., Lititz, PA 17543. Furman's - Leola

Martin, Melvin J., 86, of Gap, passed on to his heavenly home on Friday, June 30, 2017, at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the son of the late Jacob and Elsie Denlinger Martin, and the beloved husband of Geneva Kauffman Martin. Melvin and Geneva would have celebrated their 65th year of marriage on August 23.

Except for one year of study at Goshen College, Goshen, IN, Melvin lived his entire life in a beautiful historic home in Gap called Bellevue. Melvin and Geneva faithfully and skillfully operated a dairy farm and, after the sale of their cows in 1991, farmed crops. Melvin loved the land, and was an excellent steward of his home and property. He had a woodshop in his basement and made all his kitchen cabinets along with furniture items for family members and for MCC.

Melvin and Geneva were among the first members of Monterey Mennonite Church, now Forest Hills Mennonite Church. Melvin served as a song leader for many years, and was an active participant in the life of the church. He also sang bass with the Lancaster-Franconia Choral Singers for a number of years. Music was one of his greatest passions, and he maintained an excellent collection of classical music.

Melvin's greatest passion, however, was his family, and he declared that fact often, with much sincerity and thankfulness. He was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will long be remembered for his kindness, faithfulness, intellect, and humor.

In addition to his wife, Melvin is survived by four children: Janice, married to Richard Baldauf; Barbara, married to Robert Heisey; Ruth, married to Steve Heatwole; and Sheldon, married to Naomi Martin. Martin, Nancy Louise Steiner
October 23, 1959 - November 18, 2017

On November 18, 2017 Nancy Louise (Steiner) Martin went Home to be with her Saviour at the age of 58 yrs. and 26 days.

She was born October 23, 1959 at Orville, OH to Carl and Dorothy (Eberly) Steiner. In May, 1963, she moved with her parents and seven brothers to Barwick, ON.

At age 11 she gave her heart to the Lord, and with a tender conscience she sought to please Him. At council service, one week before her death, her expression was one of adoration for her Saviour.

On October 23,1980 she was united in marriage to Carl Edward Martin. God blessed them with 37 years together. She was a devoted supporter of Carl in the ministry; which often included joyfully being a keeper-at-home when Carl's ministry called him elsewhere. At the time of her death she was a faithful member of the Woodside Mennonite Church in Sleeman, ON.

She thoroughly enjoyed fellowship, and many lasting friendships were formed. Her concern was that others, too, would find and follow the way of the Lord. Her greatest joys were someone's spiritual victories. Throughout the years she has been widely known for her interest in others, her hospitality,

and her care of children. She left a legacy of unselfish love and service to others, and considered it a privilege to return devoted care to her aged mother.

Saturday, November 18, life seemed to be normal until Nancy was called from the family by a heart attack, with very little fore-warning.

Left to mourn her absence are her beloved husband Carl; 8 sons and 5 daughters-- Nathan (Esther), St. Thomas, ON; Stanley (Teresa), Aylesbury, SK; Beth (Joel Meck), Stratton, ON; Laverne (Lydia), (Stratton, ON); Pauline (David Nighswander), Barwick, ON; Donald (Marilyn), Stratton, ON; Cynthia (Jeremy Neuenschwander), Dalton, OH; Laura (Micah Kropf), Tilley, AB; Rosella (Jason Elias), Stuartburn, MB; Maynard, Chester, Anthony, and Randall, all at home; and 30 living grandchildren- 14 girls and 16 boys; 8 brothers and 1 sister. Dale (Miriam), Salmon Arm, BC; Chester (Marilyn), Hague, SK; James (Anne), Stratton ON, Gerald (Martha), North East, PA; Kenneth (Susan) Thorp, WI; Harry (Eleanor) Barwick, ON, Dennis (Betzy) Eden, ON; Donna (Timothy Martin), Stratton, ON; Dwayne, Fort Frances, ON; 25 Martin in-laws, nearly 200 nieces and nephews beside numerous great-nieces and nephews, and many others who have been blessed by her life.

She was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Dorothy , and her parents-in-law, Walter and Nancy (Shantz) Martin, one infant grand-daughter, Angela; one brother-in-law; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 23, 2017, 2:00-4:00 P.M. and 6:00-8:00 P.M. at the Woodside Mennonite Church, Sleeman, ON. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, November 24, 2017, at the Barwick Hall.
